  • Pesticide sickens area field workers
    Pesticide spraying sickened about 30 farmworkers near Mettler on Thursday morning, including seven who had to go to the hospital. Their conditions were unclear Thursday evening.   • Text story: Farmworkers Sprayed With Fungicide
    ARVIN -- Seven Giumarra farmworkers were taken to Kern Medical Center and San Joaquin Community Hospital Thursday after a non-toxic fungicide from a neighboring field drifted into the field where they were working. The workers complained of eye and throat irritation. More than 40 laborers were working in a field south of Arvin Thursday morning when the drift occurred.   • Farmworkers sickened by fungicide in Kern County
    ARVIN-Twenty grape farmworkers became sick Thursday when fungicide from a neighboring vineyard drifted over them south of Bakersfield, county agriculture officials said. Giumarra Vineyards employees were working next to a field owned by Hall Farming where a sulfur-based chemical was being applied to grapevines to prevent mildew, said David Moore, director of the Kern County Department of Agriculture and Measurement Standards. "All of a sudden we saw a lot of smoke like when there is a fog coming in and we noticed that they were fumigating in the next farm over," said one of the workers, Antonio Estrada, 46. More at:
