United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez, union co-founder
Dolores Huerta and dozens of farm workers will join an official
of the state Senate in escorting an historic farm labor bill--and
a giant replica of a pen--to Gov. Gray Davis' office
in a procession beginning at 12:30 p.m. today at the office of Senate
leader John Burton (D-San Francisco) (Room 205).
The farm workers will accompany the Senate official as he takes
the governor SB 1736, the UFW-sponsored bill allowing binding arbitration
when growers refuse to sign union contracts.
Taking the bill to the governor comes one day after 5,000 farm
workers and supporters completed a 165-mile, 10-day "March
for the Governor's Signature" from Merced to Sacramento led
by Rodriguez and Huerta.
The march as well as a continuing vigil on the Capitol's north
steps are part of a UFW campaign urging Gov. Davis to sign SB 1736.
