The Farm Workers Movement was founded in 1962 with Cesar Chavez'
dream to win dignity and respect for America's farm workers through
better working conditions and a living wage. Since then the movement
has expanded from a labor organization into ten separate entities
with career opportunities in a variety of fields.
United Farm Workers
The UFW is still at the heart of the Movement and has grown
with the times. Once an all-volunteer organization, the UFW provides
career opportunities in labor organization and political activism,
research, contract negotiations and administration, fund raising
as well as administrative support.
National Farm Workers Service Center Inc.
The Service Center is an umbrella corporation consisting
of four separate entities. The primary mission of Service Center
is to further the economic well being and education of the Latino
community through its Property Management, Housing Development and
Radio Broadcasting subsidiaries.
Radio Campesina Inc.
With a network consisting of nine stations in three states
(California, Arizona and Washington state) Radio Campesina is a
leader in all markets it serves, providing a broad mix of Latin
music, educational programming and a communication hub for Latino
communities.
National Farm Worker Service Center Property Management
Property management services are provided for these corporate-owned
subsidized housing complexes and homes. Currently responsible for
more than 1,600 units, this entity is projected to grow more than
ten times by the end of the decade. By early 2001, 2,000 units had
been acquired in Texas, making progress towards a goal of managing
20,000 units by the end of 2010. Opportunities will abound in this
field with support positions across the western United States.
Service Center Housing & Community Development Corporation
Inc.
Development provides some of the housing used by the Service
Center's Property Management arm. Based in the Los Angeles area,
Development's activities have been geographically diverse and will
be more intensive and expansive as Property Management moves toward
its long-term growth goals.
The Cesar E. Chavez Foundation
The Cesar E. Chavez Foundation protects and enhances the
legacy of the Movement's founder. Part of its mission is accomplished
through educational efforts along with coordination of public activities
aimed at realizing the movement founder's goals of non-violent political
and social reform for the benefit of farm workers and their families.
Career opportunities exist in this field include foundation administration,
copyright law, grant writing and fundraising.
Marcos Camacho, A Law Corporation
MC Law is a professional law firm specializing in contract
litigation, political action and employment law. It serves as General
Counsel to the UFW. Career opportunities exist for talented attorneys,
those who aspire to be lawyers and legal support professionals who
wish to make a difference in the lives of others.
Robert F. Kennedy Farm Worker Medical Plan/Juan De La Cruz
Pension Plan
RFK/JDLC provide medical and pension plan administration
services to union contract employers as well as to non-affiliated
organizations throughout the U.S. and the Mexican-U.S. boarder regions.
Careers in medical and pension plan administration, marketing and
sales in addition to support occupations are available.
Cesar Chavez Education Institute
The Cesar Chavez Education Institute is a project of the
National Farm Workers Service Center that was founded by Cesar Chavez
in 1966. The institute was established as a non-profit organization
for the purpose of increasing the education opportunities available
to students in schools who can benefit from additional instructional
services to achieve a higher level of learning.
UFW Foundation
The UFW Foundation's mission is to empower and improve
the lives of farm workers and other low-income and immigrant workers
through (1) the advancement of research, implementation, and enforcement
of equitable policy, (2) civic engagement, and (3) community education.
La Union Del Pueblo Entero (LUPE)
César Chávez founded LUPE, rooted in the belief that
members of the low-income community have the responsibility and
the obligation to organize themselves, and through their association,
begin to advocate and articulate for the issues and factors that
impact their lives. Further, César Chávez believed
that for people to have ownership of this endeavor, they have to
invest of themselves, their efforts and resources, to sustain it.
The membership, and the responsibility that comes with it, form
the base that is the power of the organization.
Stonybrook Inc.
Stonybrook Inc. is the service maintenance arm of the Movement.
Stonybrook provides facilities management, event coordination, work
place safety and facilities maintenance services for the entire
Movement and related
functions. Career opportunities in these fields provide great opportunities
for flexibility, advancement and personal growth and improvement.
