United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodriguez issued the following statement on President Obama’s State of the Union address.
We are pleased that President Obama reiterated his call during his State of the Union speech for lawmakers to continue to debate and pass an immigration reform legislation that focuses not only in law enforcement but also in helping bring out of the shadows the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants who currently live and labor in the United States.
It was clear from his speech last night that President Obama understands the positive economic impact that a reform would have for all Americans. Now, we must demand that Congress drafts and passes an immigration reform legislation that works for American workers, businesses, and taxpayers.
Our broken immigration system is a national crisis, but focusing on massive deportations and anti-immigration laws is not the solution. Enforcement only measures, such as the Arizona-style immigration bills, are having a devastating impact in our Latino communities and doing nothing to address our immigration issues or help the economy.
It’s time for lawmakers to work on a bipartisan effort to solve this pressing problem.
