Washington DC - Three farm workers from the Central Coast traveled to Washington D.C. this weekend to witness President-elect Barack Obama take his presidential oath of office.
Rogelio Lona, Julieta Reyes and Teresa Serrano - all farm workers from the areas of Salinas, Greenfield and Gilroy – are part of the United Farm Workers’ delegation attending Obama’s inauguration Tuesday. Among those attending the inauguration as part of the UFW delegation, include Arturo Rodriguez, UFW president, and Giev Kashkooli, UFW 3rd vice-president.
"These three farm workers were chosen to take part in the historical swearing in of our 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, because of their hard work and passion for improving the conditions of the men and women that work in the fields," said Merlyn Calderon, UFW California political director. "They have spent countless hours advocating in Washington D.C. and at the local level for immigration reform and better working conditions for farm workers."
