NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY TODAY: Oppose New Wave of Anti-Immigrant Legislation
09/20/2006

Please make a phone call TODAY to help oppose Congress’ piecemeal, enforcement only approach towards immigration reform. New bills are on the floor TODAY and we need your help to counter this fast-moving legislative attack on immigrants.

On Sept. 14, the House of Representatives passed the Secure Fence Act, H.R. 6061, which calls for 700 miles of fence on the U.S./Mexico border and requires the Department of Homeland Security to achieve "operational control" of the rest of the U.S./Mexico border through a "virtual fence." The Senate may debate and vote on this punitive legislation shortly.

Also, this week the House will vote on three new enforcement bills introduced by Representative Sensenbrenner (R-WI) that incorporate pieces of H.R. 4437 (would make it a felony to be an undocumented worker).

A national call-in day is happening TODAY, Wed., Sept. 20 to oppose this new wave of enforcement legislation and support comprehensive immigration reform. It is very important to make call your U.S. senators and representative today--even if you know he/she already supports comprehensive immigration reform.

You can also call the Congressional switchboard to be connected to their offices: (202) 224-3121.

Suggested script:

Congress should stop the narrow, piecemeal, enforcement-only approach to immigration reform. Please support a comprehensive bill that reunites families, legalizes the undocumented population, and provides future immigrants with a safe and legal way to live and work in the U.S.
